Give advice to yourself in the past
Pick an age, any age and give advice to yourself. What would you have done differently? Make it as personalised as you can - for example, include names of real people and specific examples, rather than general things like 'work harder'.
Start your piece with the words:
Advice to [your name] at [e.g. thirty] years of age.
Write to yourself using the word 'you', rather than 'I'. Here are some examples:
- It might not seem it now, but there's more to life than work. Work fewer weekends and spend more time with your family.
- Don't punish Phil for not being Nick.
- Be kinder to your son - there may be reasons why he's being so difficult.
- Don't put yourself out for Karen. She doesn't appreciate it and won't be there in the end when you need her - surround yourself with people who make your life better, not worse.
- Never run with an apple crumble.
- Spend more time with your mum. She might not have much time left.
- Don't spend time worrying about things you can't change. Focus on what you can.
You might want to record your thoughts and make them into a podcast, or write them up as a blog if you have one. Learn how to set up a blog or create your own podcast with our handy how to guides. Alternatively, you might want to turn your thoughts into an article either for yourself, or, if it's appropriate, the local paper.
