Freecycle's mission is 'to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources and eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community'.

In simple terms, it's a way of giving and getting stuff for free in your area. Freecycle is an online network of 4,142 local groups with 4,013,000 members across the globe. To join your local Freecycle group, simply sign up online at www.freecycle.org

How it works
For example, if you've got an old bicycle that's too small and gone a bit rusty, instead of taking it to the dump, list it on your local Freecycle message board. Someone in your area might be able to breathe new life into it. Or, if you've managed to break one of your favourite dining chairs that are now out of production, someone else might have one that matches.

No money ever changes hands. It's a brilliant way to re-use items in a money-friendly way for you and an environmentally friendly way for the planet.
