It's generally agreed that in the grand scheme of things, today's over 50s are the luckiest generation that ever lived.
Of course that's the big picture, and it's certainly not like that for everyone. At an individual level, there won't be too many of us who are living the high life without a care in the world. But we also hold another trump card - a wealth of opportunities to influence and change our lives… and that in itself is another major step forward compared with earlier generations.
A recent survey1 suggested that the over 50s rate financial security, health and relationships as key to their quality of life, so it pays to give some serious thought to these topics. And whilst our health and relationships are trickier to plan for, we can do a great deal to take control of our personal finances and shape our future lifestyle.
Looking after the pennies...
During the same research, a group of over 50s were asked about the best financial decisions they'd ever made. They said…
'Buying a house when we were young. We now [have] a choice of staying in it or making money by moving into something smaller which will give us financial security.' Barbara
'When I was in my late 20s … deciding to move from being in the red to being in the black … and have stayed that way since.' Mike
'Buying the biggest house we could afford when we were first married as we now have capital and have enjoyed living in nice houses. Plus - paying into various company pension funds. We now have several 'money pots' which, although not generating as much pension as we once thought, will give us some security in old age.' Chris
