Learn to ask questions

As children, the question we seemed to ask most was 'Why?'. 'Why is the sky blue?', 'Why do we blink?', 'Why can't I have another ice-cream?'.

As we get older, we acquire enough knowledge to answer most of our own personal queries and social shyness often prevents us from challenging information, even if we're in total disagreement. We often resign ourselves to taking facts at face value, especially when we're taking advice from a professional such as a GP or a solicitor.

Next time you're given a prescription, ask what it is that the drug is actually going to do to your body. This way you'll get a mini-biology lesson which will give you a better understanding of your illness and its treatment.

If you're signing property papers and you've been presented with a variety of different administration fees, ask exactly what it is that you're being asked to pay for. Don't let yourself get steamrollered into making a decision just because you're too shy to ask for clarification.

Have you got a doctor's appointment coming up or maybe a job interview? What questions would you like to make sure you ask?
