The lotus reminds us that the only certainty in life is change - constant change until we die - we're all lotuses at varying stages of reaching the surface, with varying degrees of mud weighing us down - but because we have no fixed nature, we can choose to change and leave unskilful or painful incidents behind.
To Buddhists the lotus flower represents development and leaving things behind. Buddhists have a ceremony called Vajrasapta whereby people write on pieces of paper something they want to leave behind, then burn it.
Why not try replicating the symbolism of this ceremony by writing down something from your past you want to leave behind. Then burning it.
